From the moment Microsoft first showcased a Windows on Arm (WoA) prototype powered by the Snapdragon 820 at the WinHEC event in Shenzhen in late 2016, the vision of “running standard Windows on Arm processors” has been nearly a decade in the making. Now, Qualcomm appears to be personally loosening the tight bond between its Snapdragon PC platform and Windows, ushering in a genuinely open ecosystem for Snapdragon laptops.

According to a report by 36Kr, Qualcomm has invested continuously in WoA hardware over the past decade—from the Snapdragon 835 and 850, which were shared with smartphone SoCs, to the purpose-built Snapdragon 8cx series, and finally to the Snapdragon X family featuring a custom architecture with all performance cores. The product commitment has grown year after year. Yet long-time Snapdragon laptop users have found that the weak link in the experience often lies not with Qualcomm, but with Microsoft’s Windows system adaptation.

Early Snapdragon laptops only supported 32-bit x86 software translation and could not run 64-bit programs, which was initially believed to be a hardware limitation. It was later confirmed that this was simply a matter of Microsoft updating its translation layer. In September 2025, Qualcomm released the Snapdragon X2 series PC processors with NPU performance of 80 TOPS, far exceeding mainstream x86 competitors’ 45 to 50 TOPS. However, Windows did not offer dedicated optimization for the higher NPU performance, resulting in AI experiences that were barely distinguishable from competitors.

Even more disappointing was a severe bug introduced in Windows 11 Build 29634 and 29639 that affected only WoA devices, causing the File Explorer shell to freeze indefinitely and preventing all x64 software that called that component from launching. Despite heated discussions in online communities, Microsoft never publicly acknowledged the issue until Build 29648 on August 17 quietly fixed it—without any public explanation.

It is against this backdrop that Qualcomm’s accelerated push for multi-OS support on the Snapdragon PC platform seems entirely logical.

From Community-Driven to Official Support

Qualcomm’s support for Linux did not happen overnight. In 2019, a grassroots ARM64 community called Linaro aarch64-laptops independently began adapting Linux for Snapdragon laptops. The Linux kernel achieved full adaptation for the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 1 platform in version 6.5, marking the first time Snapdragon laptops could run an operating system other than Windows.

In 2021, Qualcomm officially entered the arena, partnering with Linaro to submit official driver patches to the Linux kernel. In late October 2023, the day after the first-generation Snapdragon X platform was announced, Qualcomm released a complete initial upstream patch set directly to the Linux kernel mailing list—the first time in PC industry history that a new processor offered explicit official Linux support immediately upon launch. On May 14, 2024, Qualcomm formally announced Linux kernel support for the Snapdragon X Elite platform via its official blog.

However, up to that point, Snapdragon PC platform compatibility with non-Windows systems remained confined to the developer and enthusiast community, with all Snapdragon laptops sold on the market shipping exclusively with Windows.

Breaking the Ice at the Market Level

The latest development is unfolding in the consumer market. Saudi company Humain recently released a teaser video for new laptops, indicating it will launch at least one new product based on the Snapdragon X2 Elite processor. The company’s CEO stated that the new products will use “an operating system designed specifically for agents and artificial intelligence”—which almost certainly cannot refer to the current version of Windows.

In May of this year, multiple sources indicated that Qualcomm has joined Google’s Googlebook ecosystem, with Snapdragon X series processors set to support Google’s new Aluminium OS. Further leaks show that multiple Snapdragon-powered Googlebook models have appeared in the Bluetooth SIG certification database and in PC manufacturers’ internal product lists, signaling that the Snapdragon PC platform is about to move beyond the “Windows-only PC” phase.

Three Implications of an Open Ecosystem

For existing Snapdragon laptop users, the opening of OS choices means older devices may gain a new lease on life. Take the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, for example—this aging platform already struggles to run current versions of Windows, but switching to Aluminium OS, which is built on an Android foundation, could give it a second wind.

For consumers watching the Windows on Arm ecosystem, the end of Qualcomm’s exclusive partnership with Microsoft means more players are about to enter the field. Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform laptops are expected to officially launch within the year, which will make the entire ecosystem healthier and accelerate its development.

From a broader perspective, as the tight coupling between Snapdragon and Windows dissolves, Arm PCs may finally be leaving behind the early stage that required manufacturers to “force-feed” support. Once Arm PCs have the same freedom of OS and software ecosystems as x86, they can finally compete on a level playing field. This is not a compromise—it is a sign of maturity.
