UBS Global Wealth Management, part of UBS Group AG (NYSE:UBS), expects the S&P 500 as measured by the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NASDAQ:SPY) to finish 2026 at 8,100, roughly 6% above Thursday’s close of 7,641.

Prediction market traders agree the index will likely cross 8,000. They are far less confident it can stay there.

Polymarket prices an 84% chance the index touches 8,000 before year-end, but only a 36% chance it finishes above that level.

The gap captures the question hanging over this rally: can AI-driven earnings outrun war-related inflation and rising long-term borrowing costs?

What UBS Needs to Go Right

UBS raised its forecast for the combined earnings of S&P 500 companies to the equivalent of $350 per index share in 2026, up from $335. It expects that figure to reach $400 in 2027, up from its previous $375 estimate.
