Pinea Pi, a New York-based hardware startup, is preparing to launch a desktop AI node on Kickstarter in late September, positioning the device as a local alternative to cloud-based AI services for developers and independent professionals. The company said reservations open in late August with a $30 deposit, and early-bird pricing will start at $1,999 for the Lite model and $2,999 for the Pro version.

The device, which the company describes as a personal AI node, runs all inference locally, meaning no data leaves the hardware and it operates fully offline. Pinea Pi is targeting what it calls the AI-native generation: makers who want to control physical hardware through natural language, AI developers looking to cut recurring cloud API costs, and independent professionals who need to keep client data on premises.

The company is leaning into a three-part pitch it calls three native capabilities. The first, agent-native, means users can rewrite hardware behavior and orchestrate workflows using natural language rather than code. The second, multimodal-native, refers to the integrated camera, microphone array, and speakers that work with the pre-installed MiniCPM edge model family to deliver text, visual understanding, full-duplex real-time voice interaction, and 48kHz speech synthesis out of the box. The third, edge-native, emphasizes that all inference runs locally, with a visible light ring serving as a real-time privacy indicator and a dedicated offline switch that keeps everything running without token fees or subscription lock-in.

On the hardware side, the Pro model delivers 275 TOPS of NVIDIA AI performance aimed at robotics and embodied intelligence workloads, while the Lite version packs up to 180 TOPS of Intel performance into an all-metal desktop chassis. Both ship with Ubuntu and a software stack built around the MiniCPM model family, which the company says has been purpose-optimized for Pinea Pi hardware.

The built-in AI companion, called Piny, recognizes its owner by face and voice and includes a personal memory system that is editable, auditable, and exportable. That detail aligns with the startup’s broader privacy argument: users can inspect and control what the device remembers.

Pinea Pi’s core model capabilities come from the MiniCPM series developed by the OpenBMB open-source community, whose stated mission is to bring large models to every household. The startup frames its hardware as an extension of that open ecosystem, and it also positions the node as a reference design for ecosystem partners, offering a unified protocol, runtime, and model stack that could allow other form factors to become intelligent using the same foundation.

The market context is favorable for the pitch. U.S. Census Bureau data shows nearly 30 million one-person businesses in the United States, and industry reports indicate roughly 74% of solopreneurs already use AI in their daily work. Cloud API bills, data-privacy compliance, and latency remain common complaints in that segment, and Pinea Pi is betting that a one-time hardware purchase will appeal to users tired of recurring costs.

The company’s framing is explicitly ambitious. Just as Raspberry Pi defined DIY computing and Arduino defined DIY electronics, Pinea Pi wants to define what an edge AI device looks like, turning edge intelligence from abstract benchmarks into something people can experience, evaluate, and own on their desks.

The Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to run from late September through late October. The company has not disclosed production timelines or shipping dates for either model.
