Parents spend years telling their kids to stand on their own two feet. Then the housing market comes along and makes those two feet look like they need a very expensive pair of shoes.

In a post on Reddit, a Gen X dad said he and his wife are at odds over whether to help their 25-year-old son and his wife with a downpayment on a home. When the young couple visited, their son mentioned they were saving to buy a house. The father suggested helping them.

His wife “flipped out.”

“She said we’ve spoiled him enough, we paid for his college and his current vehicle (bought for college), their wedding and honeymoon,” he wrote. Her stance was that the parents bought their own home without help, so their son and his wife should do the same.

The father sees it differently.

“I feel different, it’s something we can afford to do financially and why not give them a head start?” he wrote. “I’m guessing it will take them years to save enough.”
