The U.S. Department of Energy awarded $500 million across seven projects to expand domestic critical-mineral processing, battery manufacturing and recycling, including $100 million awards for lithium developer Lilac Solutions, cobalt producer Jervois and battery recycler Nth Cycle.

  • Lilac’s $100 million project will build a commercial lithium extraction and refining facility on Utah’s Great Salt Lake, with DOE saying its first phase aims to double current U.S. lithium production.
  • Jervois received $100 million for a commercial cobalt refinery, while Nth Cycle received $100 million to refine recycled battery black mass into high-purity metals and battery-grade materials.
  • Princeton NuEnergy, Arcanum Ventures, Elevated Materials and Coreshell Technologies each received $50 million for projects spanning cathode recycling, electrolyte chemicals, lithium-metal materials and silicon-anode batteries.
  • The awards are the third funding round under DOE’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling programs.
  • Several recipients have also recently reported federal lobbying on battery and critical-mineral policy; Lilac filings included lobbying involving government funding and DOE.
