Pony AI stock barely budged after earnings, up just 1.1% to US$7.83, even though the headline numbers were anything but quiet. Q2 revenue came in at US$36.2m with robotaxi income multiplying several times over and robotrucks adding solid freight volume. At the same time, Pony AI still reported a sizeable net loss of US$45.4m and continued cash burn.

For short term traders the muted price move may feel underwhelming. For longer term investors the real story is the balance between rapid autonomous vehicle revenue growth and a business model that is still far from break even.

Pony AI bull case: scale, leverage and early proof points

Bulls argue Pony AI can turn rapid fleet and revenue growth into a capital efficient robotaxi and robotruck platform. Q2 gives some support. Robotaxi revenue rose more than 7x year on year and robotrucks added double digit growth, which shows that real users are paying for the service rather than this being a pure R&D story. Management flagged positive unit economics in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, an important milestone for a sector often questioned on trip level profitability. Gross margin of 17.5% and an operating margin loss that narrowed in percentage terms suggest early operating leverage as revenue grew 69% while non GAAP operating expenses grew about 10%. The joint deployment model with Uber and others, with over 4,000 vehicle commitments, aligns with the asset light plan and supports the idea that partners are willing to fund part of the scale up.

Bear case: heavy losses, cash burn and execution stretch

The bear story is that Pony AI is chasing global reach faster than economics and regulation can support it. Q2 numbers keep that concern alive. The company still reported a sizeable net loss of US$45.4m, only modestly narrower year on year, and operating cash burn of US$44m as fleet and inventory expanded. That means new cities and vehicles are still consuming cash rather than funding the group. Management targets 3,500 vehicles and more than 20 cities by year end, plus robotaxi revenue above 3.5x 2025 levels, but current revenue of US$36.2m and a 2,000 vehicle fleet show that most of that ambition still sits ahead. Heavy reliance on partners for asset light deployment also creates execution risk if those partners delay rollouts or under invest in operations, which could prolong losses even with strong headline growth.
