Investing.com — Tesla Inc. has informed staff it is preparing for a public launch of the Cybercab, its first vehicle built without a steering wheel or brake pedal, in Austin, Texas, as soon as this month, The Information reported on Monday.
The company has taken several preparatory steps in recent weeks, including test driving, providing employee rides on private roads, and conducting training with local first responders, the report said.
Tesla has been testing Cybercabs on public roads across the country, including in Austin, since June. In July, the company began allowing employees to take Cybercab rides on private roads around its Austin campus and has been collecting feedback from them. The company took similar steps before launching its first Robotaxi hub in Austin last year.
Tesla plans to begin the rollout by offering Cybercab rides to employees on public roads, then incorporate the vehicles into its Robotaxi service in Austin a few days later, the report added.
The two-seat vehicle is designed to operate without a driver and is intended for Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing service, Robotaxi. Chief Executive Elon Musk has promoted both the Cybercab and the Robotaxi service as central to the company’s future revenue and profits.
The end of August is currently the internal target for the public launch, but the timeline could change as Tesla continues final preparations. Musk said during the company’s earnings call in July that because the Cybercab was built on a new platform, Tesla had to “accumulate driving data that is specific to the Cybercab before we can put a lot of them on the road.”
