Nuclear energy is enjoying a renaissance, and companies across the industry, from uranium mining to small modular reactor developers, are seeing renewed investor interest.
This backdrop has created an attractive environment for nuclear-related start-ups, and a wave of IPOs in energy stocks is happening. One company that recently went public is Standard Nuclear (STDN -1.47%), which develops nuclear fuel to power the next generation of reactors.
Standard Nuclear recently entered into a multiyear supply deal for its fuel through 2031. Here’s what you need to know about the agreement and if the company is a buy today.

Standard Nuclear manufactures nuclear fuel for next-generation reactors
Founded in July 2024, Standard Nuclear manufactures advanced nuclear fuel, specializing in tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel specifically. TRISO fuel is poppy seed-sized uranium kernels encased in ceramic and carbon layers that act as a self-contained pressurized vessel.
Its ceramic shell can survive temperatures up to 2,900°F, essentially making it meltdown-proof. On top of that, its small size reduces the need for containment domes and enables the deployment of next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs).
TRISO fuel requires specialized manufacturing, including access to precision chemical vapor deposition furnaces and HALEU uranium. Few commercial facilities exist globally, and the specialized knowledge and equipment give licensed fuel fabricators some pricing power. Standard Nuclear’s main business is TRISO fuel fabrication, giving investors upside from demand for fuel from next-generation SMRs.

Standard Nuclear entered a supply agreement with this microreactor developer
On Aug. 20, Standard Nuclear announced a fuel supply agreement with Radiant Industries. Radiant, founded by former Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) engineers, is a nuclear start-up developing Kaleidos, a portable 1-megawatt (MW) microreactor that fits inside a shipping container and is designed as an alternative to diesel generators.
As part of this agreement, Standard Nuclear will supply multiple metric tons of custom TRISO fuel to Radiant through 2031. The move helps Radiant secure domestically produced fuel for testing at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and for its initial commercial development without having to build a fuel fabrication facility internally.
Is Standard Nuclear stock a buy?
Standard Nuclear currently manufactures TRISO fuel in small quantities at its Tennessee facility. However, it will need to expand its manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand. As a result, the company is investing heavily in capital expenditures to add new production lines and equipment. It hopes to reach a 40-metric-ton annual capacity by the end of the decade.
The nuclear industry is seeing massive tailwinds, and exciting new nuclear technologies are under development. Standard Nuclear could be an appealing choice for investors seeking a pure-play stock in nuclear fuel for these advanced reactors. That said, the company is early-stage and in the midst of substantial capital investments, so most investors should keep it on their watchlists rather than buy it right now.
