Back in January of this year, nuclear technology firm Oklo (OKLO +2.24%) announced an agreement with Meta Platforms (META -0.88%) to develop a nuclear facility in Ohio to support data centers in the region.
The “nuclear campus” will be located in south central Ohio, not far from both Cincinnati and Columbus, and will deliver 1.2 gigawatts of power to Meta facilities. Pre-construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and general construction in late 2028 or 2029. The hope is that the first phase of the nuclear plant will come online around 2030. (Oklo does not yet have the necessary license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the facility — it is pursuing that now.)
The Oklo facility will center on so-called “Aurora reactors,” small modular reactors (SMRs) that can be built more quickly and cheaply because they’re partly manufactured in factories and then delivered to the site. Yet because these reactors are new and relatively untested, meaningful scale-up by 2030 is unlikely. So, a date several years later is much more plausible.

Meta is not the only hyperscaler pursuing nuclear power for its AI data centers. Microsoft signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy that will reopen a retired reactor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania.

In September 2025, Oklo broke ground for a reactor in Idaho. The company’s share price is down 45% this year, however, as investors remain somewhat cautious about the prospects of its business model and the viability of unproven SMR technology.
