France’s benchmark CAC 40 index closed higher on Wednesday, August 26, as gains in industrial, luxury and aerospace-related companies helped the Paris market recover from recent weakness.
The CAC 40 finished at 8,462.39, up 23.19 points, or 0.27%. It opened at 8,439.38 and reached an intraday high of 8,503.65.
The advance made the CAC 40 one of the stronger major European benchmarks during Wednesday’s session.
ArcelorMittal Leads the Gains
Materials and industrial stocks performed particularly well.
ArcelorMittal gained 3.20%, making it the CAC 40’s strongest major performer. Kering advanced 2.25%, while Safran rose 1.92%. Accor and Saint-Gobain also recorded gains.
The strength of industrial stocks helped offset weakness in several technology and communications companies.
Luxury Stocks Provide Support
Kering’s rise was another positive development for the French market.
Luxury companies have considerable influence over the CAC 40 because of their large market capitalisations and global revenues.
Investors continue to monitor international consumer demand, particularly in China, Europe and the United States, where changing economic conditions can significantly affect luxury spending.
Technology Stocks Remain Under Pressure
Not every sector participated in the rally.
Capgemini fell 2.65%, while Orange, Engie and Euronext also declined.
The mixed performance demonstrates the selective nature of the current market environment.
Investors are increasingly distinguishing between companies that can benefit from improving economic conditions and those facing valuation, earnings or sector-specific challenges.
Oil Prices and Geopolitical Developments
Falling oil prices also helped improve the European market’s inflation outlook.
Investors were watching diplomatic discussions between Iran and Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
Any progress toward keeping the important shipping route open could reduce the geopolitical premium in oil prices and ease concerns about another energy-driven inflation shock.
Nvidia Remains a Global Catalyst
The CAC 40 was also influenced indirectly by expectations surrounding Nvidia.
The AI chipmaker’s earnings were expected after the US market close, with investors looking for signs that global AI infrastructure spending remains strong.
Strong results could benefit European technology and industrial companies linked to the AI investment cycle.
CAC 40 Outlook
The CAC 40 remains below its 2026 high of approximately 8,755, but Wednesday’s 8,462.39 close demonstrated renewed buying interest.
The next direction for French equities will depend on European economic data, interest rates, energy prices and corporate earnings.
For now, the modest 0.27% gain suggests investors remain cautiously optimistic.
