Grayscale takes a new step with Zcash. The asset manager began trading Tuesday, August 25 its ZCSH product on NYSE Arca, giving American investors exposure to ZEC directly from their brokerage account, without having to buy or hold the token themselves. However, the launch comes after the correction of a critical flaw in Zcash confidential transactions. The issue has since been fixed, notably with the Ironwood upgrade activated in July.

In brief
- The ZCSH fund began trading Tuesday, August 25 on NYSE Arca, a world first for direct exposure to ZEC.
- The vehicle, launched as a private trust in October 2017, was converted into an ETF after a filing with the SEC last November.
- The listing comes after the discovery and correction of a critical flaw in Zcash shielded transactions.
ZCSH, nine years after the trust, goes public
It took nearly nine years for Grayscale’s product to take the leap. Launched in October 2017 as a private trust, the Grayscale Zcash Trust is now listed on the US market under the ticker ZCSH. Grayscale initiated the transformation to ETF with a filing to the SEC last November.
The difference is mainly practical for investors. ZCSH holders do not own ZEC directly: they hold shares of a fund whose value must follow that of the ZEC held by the vehicle. This allows them to gain exposure to Zcash from their brokerage account, without managing the keys or the storage of cryptocurrencies themselves.
According to Grayscale, ZCSH is the first publicly traded product offering spot exposure to Zcash. The company especially targets investors who want to broaden their crypto exposure beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Zcash flaw cast a shadow over the launch
The launch timeline is all the more notable given that Zcash faced a major security alert this year.
In May, security researcher Taylor Hornby identified a four-year-old vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool. His discovery, made with the help of Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, revealed that an attacker might potentially have been able to create counterfeit ZEC. An emergency patch was deployed on June 1.
The issue was not limited to simply deploying a patch. Zcash’s privacy mechanisms did not allow cryptographically determining if the flaw had been exploited before its discovery.
It is in this context that the Ironwood upgrade, activated in July, gained particular importance. The new system replaced Orchard and introduced accounting rules preventing more ZEC from leaving the old pool than entered it. Any counterfeit tokens thus remain locked in the affected pool.
Grayscale bets on the return of privacy
For Grayscale, Zcash should not be regarded as just another asset to add to a list of crypto ETFs. Steve Vanourny, head of indices at the manager, presents ZCSH as a complementary exposure to bitcoin, but riskier.
The bet is based on several features of Zcash: a maximum supply of 21 million coins, a proof-of-work mechanism, and especially, the possibility to conduct transactions with more privacy than on bitcoin.
Grayscale believes these properties could appeal to investors looking for new themes in the digital asset sector. Vanourny clarifies, however, that the company will mainly monitor adoption, utility, and network security, rather than zec’s price alone. The deployment of Ironwood, exchange platform support, and regulatory developments concerning privacy-focused cryptocurrencies will be among the indicators watched.
The launch of ZCSH therefore does not guarantee the immediate arrival of significant capital. For Grayscale, the real test starts now: it remains to be seen if American investors truly show interest in exposure to Zcash and if the network manages to turn the 2026 security episode into a mere blip.
