Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, or CIIT, is designed as a land-based “dry canal” connecting the Atlantic and Pacific through rail, road and ports. Officials say it is not meant to replace the Panama Canal, but to offer companies an alternative when global shipping chokepoints are disrupted. The need to find alternatives is urgent – the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, the Strait of Malacca, the Taiwan Strait and the Panama Canal all expose the vulnerability of the global economy to geopolitical conflicts.
